Representation of Contemporary Youth in 'Young' by Tulisa

Tulisa is a young artist who grew up on a North London Estate therefore it is not suprising her music represents the stereotypes linked with contemporary youth.

The lyrics, which are repeated throughout the song, begin with 'Forgive me for what I have done cause I'm young' which suggests that being young is an excuse for everything. The lyrics continue ny saying ' I don't mean to frighten you off, it's just fun' which can relate to the stereotype of young people being dangerous, getting into fights and being criminals which are created by older people in todays society. Young people can relate to this as they deal with these judgements everyday.

The video follows Tulisa and a group of young friends causing trouble around a City. They break into an expensive hotel room by stealing the key which represents young people in a 'crazy' and disrespectful way. The group then move onto an Art exhibition which are usually very civilized and are targeted towards older mature people. Tulisa and her friends againcause trouble by being loud, drinking alcohol and dancing inappropriately. Shots of older mature people are shown between fast shots of the youths being disrespecful. Their facial expressions and body language show them feeling annoyed and disgusted with the groups behaivour following the group being kicked out by a security guard. These scenes in the video each represent teenagers/youth in a very stereotypical way that young people can relate to and would therefore purchase the song/ watch and enjoy the video.

Tulisa wears revealing clothes and looks attractive throughout the video which can be related to the male gaze theory as well as young girls aspiring to be like her.
